The imposition of President's rule in West Bengal appears likely due to ongoing legal issues and the incomplete completion of the State Election Commission's (SEC) work within the state. The current assembly session is scheduled to end on May 7, and newly elected representatives are expected to take their seats afterwards. According to sources, a minimum of 45 days is required to complete all election-related procedures, including candidate declarations, polling, and vote counting. In light of this, the Election Commission is reportedly to announce the election date within the next two weeks. Legal cases concerning the elections are currently before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
A special committee appointed by the Supreme Court has explicitly stated that resolving all cases related to the SIR is not feasible at this stage. Additionally, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised concerns regarding nearly 2 crore registered voters, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has highlighted approximately 60 lakh voters in their objections. In anticipation of the possible imposition of President’s rule, the government has appointed a new Governor for West Bengal, making the political situation more complex. ?
