Nitish Kumar, who has served as Chief Minister of Bihar for nearly twenty years, filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha on March 5th. Despite this move, there remains uncertainty about his departure from state leadership; his strong supporters believe he will remain influential in Bihar. According to sources, he was also expected to announce his son’s entry into politics on the same day he filed his papers. Meanwhile, reports suggest the BJP has been trying to move him out of Bihar for some time. In the past, they offered him the Vice President position, which he politely declined, preferring to continue his work in Bihar.
The BJP’s strategic aim appears to be to secure his departure to gain influence over key voter groups, including women, non-Yadav OBCs, and EBCs. It has also been learned from top sources that Nitish Kumar is likely to be the next offer President of India, along with a prominent role in the Bihar government. Politically, Nitish Kumar remains very strong, commanding 12 MPs and 85 MLAs, giving him significant influence over the political landscape in Bihar. The BJP is well aware of its strength and capacity to sway political developments, sources say. It is understood that, following Nitish Kumar’s exit, the BJP plans to consolidate his supporters by organising a Yatra led by his son, aiming to minimise voter shifts away from their aligned parties, a source says.
