The BJP’s ongoing effort to attract leaders from other parties shows no signs of ending. It is nearly true that the current BJP is an amalgamation of leaders from various political backgrounds, with the original members now outnumbered, a source indicates. Despite the party's governance for over a decade and holding power in numerous states, leaving only a few opposition, ruled regions, the BJP’s appetite for expansion remains insatiable.

The latest developments come from Assam, where upcoming elections are scheduled within a few months. Anti-incumbency sentiments, perceived inefficiencies within the administration, and the outspoken speeches of the Chief Minister are reportedly causing significant difficulties for the party, according to a source.

In an apparent effort to weaken the opposition, particularly the Congress party, regional leaders overseeing Assam's elections allegedly enlisted a senior journalist from the state to persuade a prominent Congress leader, who had previously served as the state president, to defect and join the BJP ahead of the polls, the source claims. Two meetings were reportedly held with the regional party head and, eventually, with the Chief Minister himself to finalise the deal.

Most negotiations were conducted over the phone, and, interestingly, these conversations were recorded, either intentionally or inadvertently, by the Journalist, the source reveals. The agreement was reportedly reached, and the influential Congress leader officially joined the BJP. After the deal, the journalist told the regional leader that he had completed his assigned task and the regional head said that his payment would be forthcoming.

This statement apparently disappointed him, as he expected a more substantial reward or recognition from top party leaders. Driven by a desire for revenge, he contacted the Congress state's head, narrated the entire story, and offered to share the recorded conversations, insisting they be played before the media so he could authenticate the exchange, the source adds.

Given the significance of this development, the matter was referred to the Congress high command for decision-making. After careful deliberation, senior leaders decided not to release the recordings publicly, fearing it might damage the party's image at the state level and provoke negative reactions among the base. This incident illustrates that political loyalty can be fluid, with individuals often switching allegiances for monetary or strategic gains, depending on who offers the highest incentives, the source concludes.
