BUREAURCRACY

The sudden ouster of Law & Order chief Madhup Tiwari was just the opening move. The Ministry of Home Affairs is now playing a longer, more decisive game. In a development that has rattled the corridors of Delhi Police, the Ministry of Home Affairs swiftly transferred Special Commissioner (Law & Order) Madhup Kumar Tiwari to Arunachal Pradesh — with immediate effect. The Delhi Lieutenant Governor wasted no time, relieving Tiwari on the spot. Frontrunners In Cold
With one of Delhi Police's most critical portfolios now vacant, the race for succession has already begun — though it appears to be running into headwinds at the very top. Top sources said that two Special CPs are actively lobbying for the Law & Order chair, Special CP Crime Devesh Srivastava, and Special CP Traffic Neeraj Thakur. However, top sources said neither appears to enjoy the Ministry's strong confidence. And in the current climate, that may as well be a closed door.
Beyond Delhi
In a striking departure from convention, the Home Ministry is reportedly not inclined to greenlight any officer from the existing pool of Special CPs stationed in Delhi. Instead, sources indicate that MHA is actively scouting a select group of UT cadre IPS officers posted outside Delhi. The top source in MHA said, "Active lobbying by some Special CPs posted in Delhi has annoyed the Ministry recently." That irritation, it seems, is now shaping appointments.
Looking Beyond Leadership
Traditionally, the Home Ministry consults Delhi Police's top brass before reshuffling senior leadership. That convention, this time, has been quietly set aside. The Ministry is charting its own course. Top sources said that MHA is looking for considerable control over Delhi Police's top ranks appointment, considering the current scenario of Law and Order in Delhi. A top source said that this move also reflects a pointed assessment of the current leadership. With a broader reshuffle in Delhi Police expected imminently, the Ministry's current mood will cast a long shadow over who rises.
