The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has convened a high-stakes meeting tomorrow to shortlist candidates for the coveted DGP position. Tamil Nadu's Chief Secretary and Home Secretary are expected to participate in the Delhi meeting, but their attendance has not yet been given approval by the Election Commission.
What should have been a routine administrative process has become significantly more complex due to the Model Code of Conduct now in effect. This electoral guideline has fundamentally altered the approval landscape, a top source said.
Top sources say that EC Nod is a must for the Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary to attend the meeting, as EC now has the power to exercise complete supervision over the DGP appointment process. The permission to participate in the DGP selection meeting ensures transparency and EC oversight throughout the process, which is essential for proceeding with the verification of service records, and no material is introduced at the final stage without due scrutiny.
As the meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, the clearance from EC still appears to be hanging in the balance. This situation highlights the delicate balance between administrative continuity and electoral propriety. While the DGP position requires urgent attention, the Model Code of Conduct demands that even routine appointments undergo additional scrutiny when elections loom.
